Italian is a Romance language descended from Latin and is a member of the Italic branch of the Indo-European language group. Italian is the first language of around 70 million people worldwide mainly located in Italy, but also in communities in Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Argentina, Brazil, the United States, Australia, Luxemburg and in some places in Africa. Italian is the fifth most taught non-native language, after English, French, Spanish and German. The first written records that can be called Italian are legal formulae dating from 960-963 A.D
Italy has the world’s seventh largest economy and is a founding member of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Italy is the sixth largest exporter of goods in the world. Italian exports include motor vehicles like the Fiat Group, Ducati, Piaggio, chemicals, petrochemicals, electricity, home appliances like Candy, aerospace, defence, and firearms like Beretta. Arguably, Italy’s most famous exports come from the fields of fashion and food with names such as Armani, Valentino, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, Benetton, Prada as well as Ferrero, Martini and Rossi and Campari.
However, Italy is also well known for luxury vehicles like Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini. Famous Italians include Michelangelo, Dante Alighieri, Niccolo Machiavelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Luciano Pavarotti,, Federico Fellini, Primo Levi, Giacomo Puccini and Guiseppe Verdi.
